There has been much written about the environmental consequences of carbon oil extraction. While it’s true that there are some serious negatives associated with carbon drilling, a lot of this is due to the fact that not all of the carbon that’s ultimately produced is going to be used to generate fuel. The real solution, however, is one which Canada’s oil and natural gas industry is already working towards: low-carbon crude oil and gas.
How does carbon oil and carbon gas compare to carbon dioxide emissions? Carbon dioxide is an air pollutant. It is the main cause for the pollution. While it is very harmful if it is stored in oil reserves, it is still acceptable. It’s not acceptable that carbon dioxide can take millions of years to be broken into smaller pieces in the atmosphere. Once it is broken down, it is released into the atmosphere. It can then interact with wildlife and natural systems before being absorbed into the land and water. This can also increase atmospheric pressure.
The issue with Cuscuta Island is two fold. First the oil fields of Canada are located on or near carbon dioxide-rich coastal soil. This means that any increase in atmospheric pressure will cause more carbon dioxide to be absorbed by the soil, and oil wells will have to be operated at higher pressures in order to extract more crude oil. Because carbon dioxide is an adsorbent, oil injected into the earth’s crust can cause it to enter underground aquifers that have a natural carbon dioxide storage capacity of thousands of years. If the environmental conditions are not altered to increase CO2 levels in aquifers and soils, then the cycles of life of the animals and plants that live in those regions will be greatly affected, sometimes wiping out entire species.
These kinds of powerful greenhouse gas emissions need to be considered seriously, not only because of their potential environmental consequences as well as because they are a direct threat to the future of our civilization and the way of life on Earth. Scientists agree that fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas must be limited to preserve the world for future generations. Unfortunately, efforts to limit climate change so that future generations aren’t terribly affected by runaway climate change as we address the current problems of greenhouse gases and pollution emitted from the burning of fossil fuels are hampered every day by the ongoing increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Carbon Oil’s unique carbon capture and utilization process was invented in the mid-nineties, however until recently, it was largely ignored by the United States oil industry. This was due to the fact that oil companies were more concerned with extraction than they were about utilization. The US Environmental Protection Agency has provided assistance to the company in their Carbon Oil research project. The research project studies the negative emissions and energy savings associated with carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CAD). This technology permits the capture transportation, utilization, and recycling of carbon dioxide enhanced oil waste. Carbon Oil’s CAD technology allows for the separation of liquids from heavy gas scrub and fuel oil operations.
